PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) – The Khmer Kampuchea Krom Association appealed to the United Nations Thursday to help ethnic Khmer women in southern Vietnam, claiming their rights were being seriously abused.
A statement marking International Women’s Day said that up to 99 percent of ethnic Khmer women in Vietnam could not read the Khmer alphabet and alleged that they were not allowed to study the language.
It also said that a Khmer woman in Vietnam identified as Treng Thy Chov had been evicted and was now in prison.
More than a million Khmers are estimated to live in southern Vietnam, mainly in the Mekong Delta. Known in Khmer as Kampuchea Krom or “Lower Cambodia”, the area has been under Vietnamese control for more than 300 years.
